Give please, if you have already, give some more...
Donating money is a good thing. Presuming that five million people have lost everything: their homes, clothing, means of making a living, literally everything, three billion dollars is not much.
Not much you say? Yup, not much - the way I calculate it, it works out to $600 per person. In my way of thinking, that’s not much.
This does NOT take into account the fact that the infrastructure is also gone. The roads, railroads, bridges, water systems, phones, even presumably the paper records in the courthouses are gone. Imagine if your town were swept away.
Please pick a charity and support it. It’s useful to check the organization’s “efficiency” to see what portion of your funds actually are put to use and how much goes to administration and fund raising. I’ve found a credible group to do that. Here is their link: www.charitynavigator.org.
My favorite charity is Americares, amazingly 99% efficient and found at www.americares.org.
Lots of folks are fond of the Red Cross. They are 91.1% efficient and are at www.redcross.org.
Doctors without Borders, one of the gutsiest outfits in the world, are not as “efficient” as the first two, but go to some really dangerous places. They are 85.7% efficient and are at www.doctorswithoutborders.org/.
Note that you have to pay attention when you go to these sites. If you want your funds to go specifically to tsumami relief, look for that link. Otherwise, your funds might go into the charity’s general fund - which is not a bad thing, but might not be what you have in mind.
So then, go donate some money, please.
